10.28.2010 // NEW (OLD) DOWNLOAD: THE WHITE STRIPES GAME STRIPEOUT

This was one of this site's first ever download, posted way back in 2002 (!!). Jack and Meg released this game in '02 to coincide with a fan contest to see who was bad ass enough to get the highest score. The winner received a bunch of "stuff" from the band. Who ended up winning this? Anyways, I have put the game back on the downloads page for you to grab. Enjoy!

10.22.2010 // EARLY WHITE STRIPES SINGLE SELLS FOR A TON OF MONEY

If only I had $18,000 lying around...

Article per NME.com:

"An early single by The White Stripes has sold for $18,000 (£11,400) at auction.

The rare version of 'Lafayette Blues' was the band's second single, and was released in 1998 through Italy Records.

Originally sold for $6 (£3.80) at Detroit's Gold Dollar venue, the artwork was hand-painted by Jack White and label boss Dave Buick.

Only 15 hand-painted copies were ever made and the version recently sold was painted by Buick, rather than White, reports Consequence Of Sound.

In 2003, a copy of the same single sold for $800 (£500). A year later, another went for $2,700 (£1,700).

Despite the rarity of the single, an even rarer collector's item is still out there.

Before The White Stripes, White was an upholstering apprentice and he formed a band with co-worker Brian Muldoon called The Upholsterers. The duo went on to record an EP, 100 of which they hid inside furniture they were working on. As yet no one has reported to have found one."

10.14.2010 // THIRD MAN RECORDS TO RELEASE LINE OF HEADPHONES

From Consequence of Sound:

"Other than being musicians, Jack White and Dr. Dre really dont have much in common. For instance, White regularly puts out releases; Dre sells cognac. However, all that changes today as White joins Dre as a member of the prestigious club of musicians who hawk headphones (via Angels We Aint).

The headphones are a result of a collaboration between Whites Third Man Records and accessories company Nixon. The black and yellow Nixon x Third Man Records Master Blaster are designed to resemble TMRs mini-45s and will be available for purchase at TMR in Nashville, TN, in a limited quantity. No word yet on any plans, if any, to expand that market. Between this and that triple-decker record, it seems like listening to records really is cool."

Here's the press release from Nixon:

"10.12.10 Nixon and Nashville's Third Man Records have partnered up and created limited edition headphones.

The Nixon x Third Man Records Master Blaster features custom packaging and artwork, in the likeness of Third Man Records' mini 45's, handcrafted leather ear cans and headband with lightweight metal speaker cabinets, ball and socket construction for a limitless range of motion and are limited in production.

"Third Man has an incredible roster of talent ranging from The White Stripes and Dead Weather to Karen Elson, Carl Sagan and Conan O'Brien to name just a few", stated Nixon co-founder Chad DiNenna. "When Third Man approached Nixon to create a custom headphone we were honored to work with them on the project."

The Nixon x Third Man Records Master Blaster is now available at the Third Man Records Nashville store which also serves as the label's one stop production house, rehearsal and photo studio, darkroom, and distribution center. All Third Man records are produced by Jack White then printed and pressed in Nashville.

10.04.2010 // THIRD MAN RECORDS VAULT PACKAGE #6 ANNOUNCED

Third Man Records announced their latest vault package (#6) this past weekend. Current members of the Vault will be treated to some epic goodies. Here's the press release from TMR:

"It is with the utmost pleasure we are proud to announce to you the contents of Vault Package #6 (City Under Siege)

The long-playing 12 vinyl is a collection of demos recorded by the Greenhornes in preparation for their East Grand Blues EP released in 2005. This session, recorded in Nashville (on 2/3/04) at the same studio used for Loretta Lynns Van Lear Rose album, contains radically different and some altogether previously unheard Greenhornes tracks. The stand-out, in this copy-writers mind, is their unparalleled assault on James Browns Ill Go Crazy addressed with vicious amounts of Blue Cheer fuzz frenzy. The hornes version of this song has been a staple in their live set for years and its a treat to finally make it available on record. The whole thing was mixed by Jack White whos also been known as an amateur haberdasher.

For your 7 serving weve decided to spare no expense...can you smell that picture disc? Its the White Stripes Hello Operator b/w Jolene made available on vinyl for the first time in several years! Now we know all of you die-hards already bought the original picture disc the day it came out (yeah, right) so in hopes of keeping those original picture discs special weve re-jiggered the artwork with some new (old) images. You like Meg White sitting next to her bass drum? CHECK! You like the flipside peppermint to be from Megs bass drum and not the huge peppermint laying next to her? CHECK! You want the fade-out from Hello Operator done away with so you can hear Jack and Meg speed up the ending and Megs opinion of how that take fared compared to the others? CHECK! You want the Stripes striking cover of Dolly Partons Jolene? The one thats been a live favorite for years? CHECK! What more could you ask for? Circus peanuts? Thats absurd. You KNOW we just sold out of those!

In an attempt to further marry the two products in this package weve decided to dig up a classic (and relatively unknown) t-shirt from the White Stripes/Greenhornes Your Southern Can Is Mine tour from 2001. No one we know actually has one of these t-shirts, but for the sake of keeping those originals special (us, again with all these considerations!) were printing this shirt on a classy white-sleeved, black-bodied baseball style t-shirt. These things are SHARP."

How about those White Stripes gems! According to Jack White himself, Hello Operator is a new mix.

If you are not already a member of the Vault, do yourself a favor and sign up!

09.30.2010 // DUNGEN TO RELEASE SINGLE ON THIRD MAN RECORDS

The Swedish band, Dungen (love the name) stopped by Third Man Records recently to record a "Blue Series" single. Read all about it:

"On a balmy evening in mid-September, I had the psychedelic kick of watching Jack White at work, producing new wax at his home studio in Nashville. On the other side of the control-room window, the Swedish quartet Dungen filled the playing space with an iridescent thunder destined for a forthcoming seven-inch "Blue Series" single on White's Third Man label. The piece I heard, a few times, was a heavy stunning instrumental long enough to spill over both sides of a 45. I hope it stays that way. Dungen's founder-composer Gustav Ejstes hammered a hypnotic winding-staircase figure on piano, threaded by Reine Fiske's snake-like coils of scouring-fuzz guitar. "Do more of that thing, the lick you were playing at the end," White told Fiske after one take, then suggested that Ejstes start the piece alone, for extra-ghostly effect, before the power chords and rhythm section kicked in. "Man, that was sick," White said with a delighted cackle after Dungen hit a metallic early-Procol Harum high my impression on the next extended performance. "Let's have another one."

09.09.2010 // JACK WHITE PRODUCED WANDA JACKSON ALBUM DUE IN 2011

Here's some information for you thanks to Third Man Records regarding the upcoming Wanda Jackson album, produced by Jack White:

"Third Man and Nonesuch Records announce the release of the new album from Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Wanda Jackson. The Party Aint Over, produced by her friend Jack White, will be out January 25, 2011.

With a remarkable career that began in 1955, Jackson, credited with being the first woman to ever record a rock and roll song - Lets Have a Party in 1958 was convinced by her friend Elvis Presley to cross over from country to rock and rockabilly music. Now known around the globe as The Queen Of Rock and The First Lady Of Rockabilly, Jackson will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2010 Americana Music Awards in Nashville tonight, September 9th. The award in the category of Performance will be presented to her by Jack White.

That these two musical luminaries would find one another is hardly surprising. Jackson is an icon to everyone who knows and loves the roots of rock and roll. White, some 30+ years her junior, is one of musics most enigmatic visionaries. The two teamed up last year to record a 45rpm single for Whites Third Man Records. The vinyl and iTunes release, a cover of Amy Winehouses You Know Im No Good b/w Shakin All Over was a big success and the pair hatched a plan to record a full-length album."

There's more where that came from. Check out the complete article HERE.
